Wild Days Lodge Forest Pre-school

Wild Days Lodge Travel Plan

This Travel Plan (TP) has been prepared by Chris Reddish on behalf of Wild Days Lodge, in respect of a successful planning application for a proposed children’s nursery building (Forest School), at The Lodge, 544 The Wells Road, Nottingham.

The Travel Plan has been prepared following discussions with Wild Days Lodge, who have provided details regarding the location of the site and development proposals.

The purpose of this document is to inform Highways Officers at NCC with respect to all highways, traffic and transportation matters associated with the development proposals.

Sustainable Transport Facilities

Paragraph 112(a) of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) states that development should “give priority first to pedestrians and cyclists, both within the scheme and with neighbouring areas; and second – so far as possible – to facilitating access to high quality public transport”. Accessibility to the site by sustainable modes of transport is discussed below

Walking

Guidelines for Providing for Journeys on Foot describes acceptable walking distances for commuters and non-leisure journeys and states that up to 500 metres is considered to be the desirable walking distance, up to 1km is an acceptable walking distance and up to 2km is the preferred maximum walking distance.

The pedestrian facilities available are typical of a site in an urban location of this nature, and it is considered that many trips to and from the site could be made by these modes of transport.

Cycling

Cyclists are typically prepared to cycle up to 5km for non-leisure journeys. The surrounding area is predominantly urban and there are a high number of residential conurbations within this area, and therefore potential for trips to and from the site to be made by cycling.

Cycling is a very cheap and fast option for accessing amenities at short to medium distances, and therefore likely to appeal to residents who live within a reasonable cycling distance.

Public Transport

The nearest bus stops to the site are located on The Wells Road which are within 100m of The Lodge.  There are also bus services on Woodborough Road and Porchester Road and some people may be prepared to walk this distance to use the bus services.

The bus stops on The Wells Road are served by NCT bus numbers 41 and 42. Timetable details for these bus services are available online.

Car Parking

No on-site parking is proposed in this case and parents and carers will be encouraged to drop off and collect their child or children from the site either on foot, by cycling or by using public transport. The site is easily accessed on foot from the surrounding area and there are bus stops along The Wells Road providing excellent public transport links. The site is in close proximity to a primary and secondary school, allowing opportunities for dropping off and collecting multiple children in one trip.

It would be very clear to any parent or carer considering placing their child at this nursery that there is no on-site parking, and so an informed decision would be made at the outset, regarding the need to access the site by alternative, more sustainable, modes of travel.

If, however, parents or carers choose to drive their child or children to the pre-school nursery, there is both time restricted and unrestricted on-street parking available within approximately 175 metres of the site on The Wells Road to the north and on Boynton Drive to the south of the site. This will not, however, be encouraged.
